Feature – The projects of the trainees, part 1: Team A

We are going to introduce a short preview of the projects the participants of TOSMI 2010,  General Blender Techniques module, are developing during the course.

As you know, in order to better grasp the material, covered  in General Blender Techniques, the trainees are making their own short 3D movie in Blender. In doing so, the participants gain basic knowledge of Blender and practice their artistic and newly gained technical skills.

Today our focus is on Team A. What are they up to? What is their movie going to be about? We had a chat with John, a member of team A and got a basic idea of what’s coming.

The topic of team A’s 3D animated video is “The End of Capitalism”. The team has decided on a prophetical approach and their video is going to show in a very symbolic way how humanity’s greed (one of the driving forces of capitalism) will eventually consume and destroy every possible natural resource on Earth and after that – humanity itself. The video will be a statement, rather than an actual depiction of what is going to come to pass.

At the beginning there will be a huge machine ( a symbol for industry, capitalism, big corporations), which grabs trees and puts them in it’s hull, destroying them. From the back the machines spews the product of the destroyed trees – money (dollar symbols). Those money will be taken by many little humans (symbolizing humanity), who want more and more, directing the machine to continue consuming resources.

At one point, however, all the trees (resources) run out and the machines focuses on the humans, starting to consume them instead. This is the vision of team A of “The End of Capitalism” and all we know on the project of the team.

Check back tomorrow for a preview on the project of team B!

Day 4 – what’s up today? Topic of the day are Materials, Textures, Lights (Lighting) and Rendering

Today is a very hard day for both the trainers and trainees. Delving deeper into the vast ocean that is Blender 2.5, participants of TOSMI 2010 face the quite difficult, but also very important things in the software – materials, textures, lighting and rendering. Although very complicated and tiresome, the material covered today is of great importance and left the trainees not only exhausted, but much more skillful and self sufficient in Blander 2.5.

Day 3 of TOSMI 2010 isn’t only about R&R – check out these photos!

Here is what the participants were up to today in TOSMI.

Here are some more relaxed photos of Day 3 of TOSMI 2010

As you can see, the trainers and trainees aren’t working all day with no break – it wouldn’t be productive. See them on their lunch break.

Day 3 of TOSMI 2010 – Animation and Rigging

Today, during Day 3 of TOSMI 2010, the trainers are covering basic animation and rigging techniques in Blender 2.5, which will allow the participants to actually make a live, moving picture.
